PreS-K—This rhyming book explores the habits of a wide variety of baby animals. Each spread discusses a few animals that are sometimes loosely related but often just seem to fit the rhyme scheme. Occasionally the rhymes are slightly forced, such as "ride safe in mother's jaws" paired with "crawling on all fours," but by and large the narrative moves along easily. Young readers will enjoy the large, brightly colored pictures, and the broad spreads without too much action make this title suitable for sharing with a larger group. The animals, from the common duck to the much less represented platypus, provide the opportunity for interactive discussion with children, who will be aware of some animal noises while possibly getting a first introduction to some less common species.
VERDICT A secondary purchase for new readers and for engaging storytime audiences.
