PreS-Gr 1—Martin and Carle collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1967), Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (1991), Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? (2003), and Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? (2007, all Holt). In July of 2010, the first two titles became available in an easy-reader format, and these titles complete the quartet. They do not differ from the original trade book publications in terms of either text or illustration. The lilting, infectious rhymes and bold, bright collages, remain intact. The differences come first in terms of trim size." The intention here is that children who have had an enjoyable lap-sit hearing these books will now read them independently, attracted by the more "grown-up" format. These first-reader editions include both activities and discussion suggestions to extend the stories. Libraries in need of more books for emergent readers will welcome these popular favorites.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ
New ed., 2007. In these somewhat superfluous brand-extending easy reader versions of two more of Martin and Carle's picture books, the trim size is smaller, and the texts are broken into short phrases. Back matter includes a letter to parents and teachers and further activities. Review covers these My First Reader titles: Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?
