Gr 8 Up–In this sequel to
Gap Year in Ghost Town, 19-year-old Anton Marin continues to spend his gap year working for the family business as a ghost hunter. Teamed up with his new partner, Rani, and his best friend, Bec, Anton feels ready for anything. However, when more ghosts start appearing, including some that seem more aggressive than usual, the Marin way of easing ghosts to the other side without harming them is questioned. Also, a group known as the Ragged Sisters are kidnapping and killing those with ghost sight as part of a mysterious and sadistic ritual. When Anton’s aunt, who has been missing for five years, reappears as a result of one of the rituals, Anton and his friends must figure out how to stop the Ragged Sisters. Despite being an Australian novel, this book is filled with American and British pop culture references and movie quotes that most teens will pick up on. Refreshingly, there is no romance between the two ghost hunters as Rani is happily living with Bec at the beginning of the novel. Despite the characters’ adult age and some language and gore, the book’s appeal skews more towards younger teens.
VERDICT An additional purchase for libraries where the first novel circulates.
