PreS-Gr 1—This series strives to promote character development and show children at an early age that bullying is unacceptable. The first-person narration from a child's point of view lessens the didactic qualities of the themes, and the clear, straightforward writing helps make concepts such as fairness, responsibility, and respect easily comprehensible to young readers. There isn't much text here, but the messages about how to be a good citizen and friend are clear ("I tell the truth. Kids who bully lie."). Although these are very slim volumes, they are effective ways to make children aware of bullying and its negative effects.
These easy-to-read books try to promote healthy social skills and anti-bullying behavior, but they oversimplify bullies' behavior and motivations and their focus is scattered: using the recycling bin (Citizen) doesn't really have anything to do with not being a bully, and "Kids who bully throw trash for attention" (Caring) is a blanket statement. Contrived but chipper staged photos illustrate the texts. Reading list. Glos., ind. Review covers these Pebble Books: I Don't Bully titles: I Am a Good Citizens and I am Caring.
