Gr 2–4—Maybelle, a cockroach, and Henry, a flea, meet Bernice, an ant. She has a cold and cannot smell very well so she is stranded at Maybelle's house. Bernice offers to make Maybelle her queen so that she can fetch her food (Bernice needs to work). Maybelle is excited about this prospect since all she can think about is food, and not having to hunt for it is very appealing. The only problem is that Bernice is a bit dotty, and Maybelle and Henry always have to rescue her from precarious situations. Speck's writing is filled with humor, and the story will have great appeal to children. Rátz de Tagyos's illustrations are simple but hilarious. With its easy-to-follow story line and short chapters, this is an ideal choice for readers who are just starting chapter books.—Mary Cass Mabbot, Indianapolis Public Library
A fun, approachable chapter book that’s perfect for newly independent readers. Simple sentences and short chapters ease children into the format. Silly characters—including Bernice, the ant with a head cold, and Myrtle and Herbert Peabody, the uptight homeowners—will amuse kids. The narrative is full of charming details, such as “The Rules” followed by the bugs of the house: “When it’s light, stay out of sight; if you’re spied, better hide; never meet with human feet.” Much of the story’s humor derives from Bernice’s worker-ant drive to serve, without regarding her own safety. “Put your legs up and relax, honey,” she tells Maybelle, completely unfazed after one encounter with the bug-phobic Peabodys. “I saw a little glob of icing that would be real nice with that sprinkle.” Small, droll illustrations appear on nearly every page, breaking up the text and enhancing the story’s humor.
