Gr 3–5—Nine-year-old Mimi Power is the witty narrator of this comical and charming read. Her life has been tumultuous since the arrival of her sister Waby (Lily June), now three years old, and she struggles to find her place in the daily family chaos. Everything from getting Waby's hand stamped at the library to picking the right color vitamin for her has become a disaster for the entire family, but especially for Mimi. When she learns of an opportunity to participate in her school's art show, a competition that offers a highly desirable prize, she eagerly puts forth her "Mimi Power" and devises a plan to shine in her own spotlight and prevent one of Waby's usual outbursts. By finding her creative voice, she grows both artistically and as an older sister. This endearing, laugh-out-loud chapter book is an ideal read for older siblings who can relate to living with a sometimes-demanding younger sibling, as well as for children who are artistically inclined. A brief epilogue connects Mimi's artwork with the that of Henri Matisse. Short, engaging chapters; large print; and playful, imaginative illustrations make this a great pick for reluctant or beginning chapter-book readers. Fans of Junie B. Jones, Ramona the Pest, and Marissa Moss's Amelia's Notebook (S & S, 2006) will adore entertaining Mimi and her adventures in art and mischief.—Natalie Braham, Denver Public Library
