PreS–A toddler learns to count to 10 as a way to change angry feelings into a good mood. The title opens when a toddler gets angry after falling from a stool to grab a biscuit from a high shelf. Dunbar’s text is lyrical. For example, “Oh, little one,’ says mum. ‘You’ve banged your head, that’s not much fun.’ Yes! I had a bump. It made me cry. The biscuit jar was up too high!” The child in the illustrations is adorable. But certain aspects of the story could use more details. As the title suggests, the color red is used to embody the angry mood. When the child has a temper tantrum, mum suggests counting to 10 instead. After counting to 10, the smiling child peacefully sits cross-legged, eating a biscuit. This book can be used to educate toddlers and preschoolers about anger.
VERDICT Although the act of counting to 10 to fully diffuse anger might be a tad unrealistic, it shows parents a technique that might help with a tantrum. Recommended as an additional purchase.
