Gr 9 Up–A mixed boy looks for meaning across continents as he discovers who he is. Half Indian, half Australian, Rudra Solace is 16 and has only known life in the small fishing village Patonga, which is close to Sydney. Although Rudra’s mother emigrated to the Australian suburbs from Kolkata, she has always left her culture out of the picture. Rudra feels a complete disconnect from his own family history, as he has never met any of his relatives from his maternal side. When his Indian grandmother, his didima, arrives at their door unexpectedly, Rudra will learn much about both sides of his heritage and how much they really have in common. A tale where myths, folk tales, legends, and unexpected family secrets merge, this book is written with vivid language and descriptions. Rudra’s conflict with his identity will resonate with readers who have more than one culture in their own families. Some Australian slang and Indian folklore might be confusing to those not familiar with said countries, but overall Grant does a great job of telling a well-rounded story across cultures.
VERDICT A good purchase for young adult collections, especially in libraries that serve communities with mixed heritage readers.
