This spring brings many ­adaptations of children’s and YA books to streaming services. As kids and teens start watching shows destined to be new favorites, it’s a great opportunity to put the adapted titles, other books in the series, or some ­read-likes in their hands.

Here are a few 2023 spring releases.

Eva the Owlet
Apple TV. March 30
This animated series is an adaptation of the “Owl Diaries” series by Rebecca ­Elliott and stars Vivienne Rutherford and Evie Hsu, voicing Eva and Lucy, respectively.

The Crossover
Disney+. April 4
Based on the Newbery-winning
novel-in-verse by Kwame ­Alexander, the cast features Jalyn Hall and Amir O’Neil starring as the brothers at the heart of this story. Tony winner Daveed Diggs narrates. For those who have already read The Crossover—and the two other books in the series, Booked and Rebound—see page 26 for read-alikes.

Frog and Toad
Apple TV. April 28
Based on the beloved series by Arnold Lobel, this animated adaptation features Nat Faxon (Our Flag Means Death) as Frog and Kevin Michael Richardson (The Simpsons) as Toad.

American Born Chinese
Disney+. May 24
This much-anticipated adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel and Printz Award winner features Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh.

Can’t mark the calendar for this yet, but the trailer is out, firing up fans who are eagerly awaiting an official release date for:

The Summer I Turned Pretty
Season 2. Amazon Prime
Viewers waiting for Lola Tung’s return as Isabel “Belly” Conklin may have to hold out until summer to get season two of this adaptation of Jenny Han’s series. While they wait, it’s a good time to read or reread the trilogy.
