With large, well-spaced print, plentiful color illustrations to illuminate the action, and a perfectly paced mystery, this title will build both kids’ confidence and their interest in a good story. VERDICT Recommended for most collections, particularly where the other “Wallace and Grace” books have circulated well.

Each story blends imaginative play with real-world events, and the illustrations cleverly show both Milo’s fantasy world and what’s actually happening. The books feature a few short chapters with large font and more advanced vocabulary than many early readers, making them a good fit for children transitioning to chapter books. Each title ends with a craft activity, glossary, and thought-provoking questions to extend the learning and play. VERDICT A strong addition to early chapter book collections that celebrates creativity and the power of imagination.

Gr 1-3–Bo is a second grader who loves music, science, and spending time with his friends and family. He also has achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism that means some of his bones are shorter than other kids’. In this engaging series, Bo navigates relatable childhood challenges: he doesn’t get the role he hoped for in the school play, worries about making mistakes during his piano recital, breaks a string on his dad’s guitar, and explores the different sounds shoes make in a creative sound experiment. Each book contains four short chapters, accessible text, and colorful illustrations that fill much of each page, helping early readers stay engaged. Back matter includes a glossary, information about achondroplasia, discussion questions, and an activity guide that ties into the story. VERDICT A thoughtful, well-written series that combines everyday kid experiences with music and disability representation. A strong choice for diversifying early reader collections and ensuring all children can see themselves in stories.

Barrows, Annie. Mermaids and Mix-Ups. illus. by Sophie Blackall. 116p. (Stella and Marigold: Bk. 2). Chronicle. Sept. 2025. Tr $15.99. ISBN 9781797219714.
Gr 2-4–It’s hard to go wrong with a writing and illustrating duo like Barrows and Blackall and the second book in Stella and Marigold doesn’t disappoint. With an endearingly accurate portrayal of a child’s world view, readers follow the seven-year-old Stella and four-and-eight-twelfths-year-old Marigold in their daily adventures living in their half of a house. In this story, the girls receive a purple book with writing prompts inside as a gift from the cousin they’ve never met. One of the prompts asks them to list their “besties” and there are just so many lines! Stella and Marigold set out to make more friends and fill those lines, but it’s harder than they realize. Young readers will deeply relate to the everyday conundrums faced by Stella and Marigold as they move through the world and the gorgeous illustrations add another dimension of hilarity and understanding. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in all collections, especially where “Ivy and Bean” is beloved and still circulating.

ea vol: 32p. (Bigfoot Adventures). Kaleidoscope. Aug. 2025. lib. ed. $32.95.
K-Gr 2–In this hybrid fiction and fact early chapter book series, an illustrated version of Bigfoot explores various places, while sharing facts and lots of photographs of the things he learns along the way. In the vein of the “Fly Guy Presents” series, Bigfoot walks readers through amusement parks, a chocolate factory, the International Space Station, a Zoo, the White House, and Yellowstone National Park. Each book finds Bigfoot sneaking into the location and hiding from staff and other visitors as he explores and shares his findings. A scavenger hunt offers things for readers to look for at the start of each book, while back matter includes a glossary, discussion questions and writing prompts. VERDICT Though the conceit of each volume can feel a little forced, young readers will enjoy the facts and the idea of Bigfoot as their guide. Recommended for most collections, especially where nonfiction early readers do well.

Bates, Janet Costa. The Box of Possibilities. illus. by Gladys Jose. 128p. (Rica Baptista). Candlewick. Nov. 2025. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781536227673.

They imagine everything from polka-dotted rainbow unicorns to magic forks that make your vegetables disappear. No one else in Rica’s house, including her parents and her cousin Serenity, are interested in opening the box (which her uncle mailed to himself) until he returns from vacation. While they wait, Laini and Rica have fun using their imaginations to think of more possibilities for the box’s contents including superpowers. In addition to the box at the center of the story, Rica listens and tries to comfort her cousin Serenity who is feeling sad and neglected by her father. Rica writes letters to God expressing her concern about various things including Serenity. Young readers will relate to the fun and curiosity, as well as the exploration of feelings in this faith, community, and family-driven story. Illustrations throughout enhance the story. VERDICT Purchase where faith-centered first chapter books are requested or collections where the other books in this series circulate well.

ea vol: illus. by Daniel Duncan. 128p. (Dino Quest). Kaleidoscope. Aug. 2025. Tr $32.95.
Gr 2-4–In this inventive chapter book series, a medieval-type world is populated by dinosaurs instead of dragons. Knights race into battle on Allosaurs and farmers use Triceratops to work the fields. The first book of the series, The Trouble with Tyrannosaurs, introduces us to Moss Dungpile, a lowly dino dung- shoveler who discovers he can talk to dinosaurs. Soon, he finds himself training Tyrannosaurs and helping the princess overcome a coup. In The Mammoth Riders, Sir Moss Dungpile, now a brand new Knight, and Princess Opal work to stop the people of Primordia from going to war with their neighboring kingdom. The girls are kind, responsible, and thoughtful—qualities that make them great role models for young readers. Horse lovers will appreciate the heavy focus on riding and stable life. Each book contains 10 short chapters with simple vocabulary and plenty of colorful illustrations, making them accessible and engaging for early chapter book readers. VERDICT A horse lover’s dream that lives up to previous titles in the series and is well worth adding to collections.

Brallier, Jess & Jack Keely. Tuck and Tina and the Lost Fortune. 144p. (Tuck and Tina). Andrews McMeel. Sept. 2025. pap. $10.99. ISBN 9798881602048.
Gr 2-4–This hilarious new series features two mice who live in a school, one is a class pet, and one is a mouse who wandered in one day in search of a new home. In this first adventure, the two mice overhear that the school is closing because they can’t afford to stay open. They also hear about a fortune supposedly hidden by the school’s founder and dedicate themselves to finding the fortune and staying open. This heavily visual chapter book presents in a handwritten and illustrated diary style that will appeal to fans of “Wimpy Kid” and “Dogman” and the humor is spot-on for the early elementary crowd. VERDICT It’s hard to imagine this not becoming an instant hit with young readers. Recommended for all collections.

Button, Lana. Brianna Banana, Worst Surprise Ever. illus. by Suharu Ogawa. 96p. (Orca Echoes). Orca. Oct. 2025. pap. $8.95. ISBN 9781459843196.
Gr 2-4–With an emphasis on social emotional learning, this story featuring Briana Banana focuses on accepting unexpected changes. When Brianna goes to school expecting to be Helper of the Day, she is surprised to find a substitute teacher who doesn’t know the routine. And that is just the beginning of Brianna’s mishap-filled day of shenanigans, misunderstandings, consequences, and belly-breaths to calm down. This series does an admirable job of presenting one day in the life of an irrepressible, possibly neurodiverse kid who just wants everyone to understand what she meant! Brianna is a great character that kids will be both entertained and comforted by– particularly those kids who might see themselves in Brianna. VERDICT Recommended for all collections where social emotional chapter books will find an audience.

ea vol: (Code Reader). Treasure Bay. Apr. 2025. pap.
Gr 3-6–The new “Code Reader” collection is designed to support children as they begin reading early chapter books and graphic novels by offering phonetic sound keys for more challenging words. For example, the word unicorn would appear as “unicorn (YOO-nih-korn).” Each title highlights a different high-interest topic, including dinosaurs, ghost catchers, snow leopards, and more, ensuring broad appeal. While the concept sounds promising, its execution raises concerns. The reading level of these texts already aligns with older, more confident readers who are likely to have mastered decoding strategies or to benefit from contextual clues. For these readers, the inclusion of phonetic spellings can feel distracting, even patronizing, breaking the flow of the narrative. In the graphic novel titles, where page space is already crowded with dialogue, illustrations, and action, the additional pronunciation guides can overwhelm readers and clutter the visual field. Rather than supporting comprehension, they may add an unnecessary layer of complexity. That said, the books’ plots are lively and entertaining, with topics certain to attract fans of humor, adventure, and animals. The series may find a niche audience among struggling readers who enjoy high-interest stories but need decoding reinforcement. However, for most readers, the format is more likely to hinder than to help. VERDICT An optional purchase, unlikely to meet the needs of most early reader collections.

Capetta, A.R. Hocus and Pocus and the Dragon Next Door. illus. by Charlene Chua. 96p. (Hocus and Pocus: Bk. 2). Candlewick. Mar. 2025. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781536224931.
Gr 1-3–Slightly magical puppies Hocus and Pocus are back in this funny tale of found family and friends. In this second book of the series, Hocus and Pocus meet their neighbor’s new pet—a dragon! While Hocus is excited, Pocus is nervous about making a new friend. Especially a dragon. As the dogs accompany their witch companion from house to house handing out potions (include “Keep Calm in a Pinch,” designed to help the nervous stay calm if they take a little bit every day), Hocus and Pocus learn more about their new neighborhood and brainstorm ways to make the dragon (and themselves) more comfortable with new friends and situations. This diverse series (which prominently incorporates character’s pronouns into the story) makes for an adorable and humorous read sure to please both fans of animal fiction and magical stories. Bright, friendly illustrations with beloved magical creatures like unicorns and dragons enhance the story as well. VERDICT Recommended for most collections, especially those where inclusive first chapter books do well.

Capetta, A.R. Hocus and Pocus and the Snow Day Sorcery. illus. by Charlene Chua. 96p. (Hocus and Pocus: Bk. 3). Candlewick. Feb. 2026. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781536224948.
Gr 1-3–Magical dogs Hocus and Pocus return in this whimsical follow-up to their debut, where they were adopted by a pair of witches. In this installment, the pups participate in a “potion drop”—a reverse trick-or-treating event where they hand out potions and spells to meet their new neighbors. Their biggest challenge comes when they learn that a neighbor’s pet dragon, Bye-Bye, keeps accidentally setting things on fire. Hocus and Pocus work together to brew a “not scared” potion to approach the dragon, and later, a potion that might help them communicate. Each pup has a unique magical ability introduced in the first book, so reading the series in order is recommended for full context. Digitally rendered, full-color illustrations appear frequently and lend a younger, picture book–like feel, which helps make the magic accessible and appealing to newer chapter book readers. VERDICT A fun and magical addition to early chapter book collections, especially for readers who enjoy fantasy with a gentle touch.

Cargill, Perdita & Honor Cargill. Unexpected Visitors. illus. by Katie Saunders. 128p. (Diary of an Accidental Witch). Tiger Tales. Aug. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340985.
Gr 3-5–This fun series follows Bea Black, who moves with her dad to the town of Little Spellshire. Bea’s dad accidentally enrolls her in a witch school, even though she is very much not a witch. In this seventh adventure, Bea and her classmates must prepare the school for some very special visitors. Despite everyone’s best efforts, things go hilariously and chaotically wrong. Bea writes in journal entries throughout the day with illustrations and school updates are included throughout. This makes for a fun reading experience for older, more confident readers who will notice the realistic misspellings and handwritten sections. VERDICT Recommended where the other books in the series do well, or where witch stories are in demand.

Casamayor, Alberto. The Prophecy of the Scorpion. illus. by Pepe Palma & Josep “Kako” Carrasco. 156p. (The Super Hoopers: Bk. 3). Editorial el Pirata. Nov. 2025. pap. $15. ISBN 9788419898388.
Gr 4-6–The third book in this series follows nine-year-old Joel, who struggles with stressful situations—like shooting two free throws that could win the game against the town’s best and richest basketball team. The action-packed introduction hooks readers immediately. While reading the series in order is helpful, Joel provides a brief recap and reminders of key characters for newcomers. The text is primarily in chapter book format, but colorful illustrations, speech bubbles, and sound effects give it a comic book feel that will especially appeal to reluctant readers. Told in an engaging first-person narrative, this fun sports story is perfect for older elementary readers. VERDICT A great addition to sports collections, especially where athletics-themed books are popular.

Chapman, Linda. Charm Breaker. illus. by Kim Barnes. 160p. (Star Friends). Tiger Tales. Sept. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340992.
Gr 1-4–Star Friends are back for their 13th adventure. This series features a group of friends who realize they can communicate with animals that have traveled to Earth from the Star World. The animals teach the girls magic that helps them do good in the world. In this story, the girls suspect dark magic is at play when the adults in town start acting strange after a town Fun Run. Can the girls figure out who is behind the dark magic and stop it before things get out of control? Although a bit repetitive, the storylines in this series offer just enough action and danger to keep young readers interested and returning for the adorable magical creatures. Black-and-white illustrations are featured throughout. VERDICT Purchase where the earlier books circulate well.

Gr 1-3–In this new series, readers meet JoJo, a girl with hearing differences and a hearing aid, who always finds a way to add some sparkle and shine to her everyday life. The first four books find JoJo dealing with frustration after losing a cupcake contest, bedazzling her new hearing aid and inviting her friends to make more dazzling jewelry with her, learning how to be in harmony with her friends, both musically and interpersonally, and learning the consequences of lying and breaking the rules while pet sitting for the first time. Each volume is filled with short paragraphs and frequent full color illustrations. Young readers will love to follow along with JoJo’s relatable adventures. “Think about it” questions and a craft or activity prompt are appended to each story. VERDICT Recommended for most collections where short beginner chapter books are in demand.

ea vol: 64p. (Fairy Tale Journals). Capstone/Picture Window. Aug. 2025. pap. $8.99.
Gr 1-3–Gretel, Jack, Rapunzel, and Snow White take center stage in the latest additions to the Fairy Tale Journals series. Through a first-person diary format, each character recounts their version of classic fairy tale adventures through short entries accompanied by illustrations and doodles. While the concept is creative, the execution feels uneven. The design lacks cohesion—journal lines are inconsistent, and the doodles don’t always reflect the character’s voice, which detracts from the immersive feel. The text reads somewhat choppily due to the diary structure, and the plots, though loosely based on the original tales, come across as basic and a bit cheesy rather than adding new depth or excitement. These books may appeal to fans of diary-style storytelling, but they don’t stand out in a crowded field of fairy tale retellings. VERDICT A secondary purchase for larger collections where diary-format books and fairy tale spins are in high demand.

Cypess, Leah. The Mystery of the Mermaid. illus. by Sarah Lynne Ruel. 112p. (Miriam’s Magical Creature Files: Bk. 3). Abrams. Apr. 2026. Tr $19.99. ISBN 9781419785849.
Gr 1-4–Miriam is back to investigate another magical creature—this time, mermaids at Mermaid Lake. Determined to prove their existence, she crafts a plan to spot one, even though her family doesn’t believe. The story unfolds with short chapters and accessible text, ideal for early chapter book readers. A standout design element is the font change from standard to handwriting whenever Miriam writes in her journal, which adds charm and clarity. While this review is based on an early copy with only descriptions of the illustrations, they appear to be plentiful and thoughtfully placed. Despite the engaging premise, the plot unfolds slowly and lacks a strong climax. VERDICT While not essential, this is a fine addition to early chapter book collections, especially where gentle mysteries and magical realism are popular.

Davidson, Susanna. Illustrated Stories from Aesop. illus. by Giuliano Ferri. 272p. (Illustrated Story Collections). Usborne. Oct. 2025. Tr $19.99. ISBN 9781836052395.
Gr 2-5–This functional and fully illustrated collection of Aesop’s fables tells the classic tales in a kid-friendly way. Many of the classics are included here, like “The Hare and the Tortoise,” “The Boy who Cried Wolf,” and “The Lion and the Mouse,”as well as some less familiar tales such as “The Fir Tree and the Bramble” and “The Crab and his Mom.” Families and teachers in search of a way to share these tried-and-true fables will be pleased with this collection. Full-color illustrations spread across pages and pleasing details adorn the corners of this collection, giving it an old-fashioned storybook feel, reminiscent of the Usborne Illustrated collections that do so well in most libraries. VERDICT Recommended where story collections and classics will circulate well.

DiCamillo, Kate. Lost Evangeline. illus. by Sophie Blackall. 160p. (The Norendy Tales). Candlewick. Sept. 2025. Tr $17.99. ISBN 9781536225525.
Gr 2-5–This fairy tale series set in the land of Norendy (Puppets of Spellhorst and Hotel Balzaar) continues with a spellbinding tale that follows the story of a shoemaker with dreams of going to sea ,who finds a tiny child in the toe of a boot he is repairing. He names the child Evangline, after a ship he once saw, and raises her with the same dream of going to sea. But when the two are separated, a series of events get set into motion, bringing them inevitably closer to the sea and maybe just maybe, back to each other. Dicamillo is a master of the craft, and it shines brightly in this delightful, mesmerizing tale. Although it is not meant to be read by a beginning reader, it is most definitely made to be read aloud, and it will be treasured by all ages. Blackall’s illustrations, as always, are so magical in and of themselves, that this book is made even more indispensable with their addition. VERDICT Recommended for all collections.

Dyball, Rennie & Piper Klemm. Packer Pressure. illus. by Dolores Okecki. 192p. (Show Strides: Bk. 5). Andrews McMeel. Jul. 2025. pap. $12.99. ISBN 9781524898908.
Gr 4-6–Tally loves horses, and when she gets the opportunity to ride a well-established horse, Cam, in a show, she is beyond excited. Alongside her are friends Maggie and Mac, each facing unique challenges with their own horses. Horse lovers will enjoy the ride as the trio navigates friendship, competition, and the ups and downs of equestrian life. Sparse grayscale illustrations make this title more suitable for established chapter book readers. The horse-heavy terminology may be difficult for those unfamiliar with riding culture, but fans of the genre will appreciate the depth. VERDICT A strong addition for collections where horse-themed chapter books are in demand.

ea vol: illus. by David Lee. (Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja Set 2). ABDO. Aug. 2025. lib. ed. $35.64.
Gr 3-5–Chase Cooper returns in the latest additions to this long-running ninja-themed series. In these installments, Chase takes on the role of campaign manager for his cousin Zoe’s student body president run, deals with the return of the secretive Scavengers, navigates Spirit Week, tries to get Wyatt to reclaim his ninja clan, joins an astronomy club overnight with potential dangers, and faces an online stranger threatening to reveal his identity as ninja leader. While marketed as ninja adventures, the pacing is a bit slow and the plots tend to meander. The dialogue often feels more mature than the characters’ ages, with sixth graders referring to each other as “babe,” which may not appeal to all readers. Sparse black-and-white illustrations appear every few pages, but the text-heavy format is best for well-established chapter book or middle grade readers. With several books preceding these, the series is best read in order. VERDICT A secondary purchase for libraries where ninja-themed books have steady circulation and readers are already invested in the series.

K-Gr 2–Six-year-old first grader Ava Lin is back in this third book of the series, in which she is excited for her grandma, called Popo in Chinese, to visit. Popo’s visit coincides with the school walkathon, in which Ava is determined to win a gold medal. The preparation for the Walkathon, coupled with Popo’s visit, turn out to be overwhelming for Ava, as she struggles to balance everything she wants and needs to do. Ava and her family model healthy behaviors for calming down, setting goals, and recognizing emotions. Kids will enjoy the relatable situations and the frequent, simple but effective illustrations. VERDICT A suggested purchase where early chapter books are popular.

In these new titles, Ali competes in a class spelling bee, takes his first karate class inspired by his idol Muhammad Ali, learns it’s brave to cry after a fall on the monkey bars and hones both swimming and big brother skills. Each book opens with an introduction to Ali’s close-knit Pakistani American family and includes Urdu words, offering cultural context and linguistic diversity. End matter features themed jokes, simple crafts with clear instructions, and discussion questions to support comprehension and engagement. The books are structured in three short chapters, with simple vocabulary and short sentences ideal for newly independent readers. ea vol: 24p. (Fairy Tale Classics). The Child’s World. Aug. 2025. lib. ed. $32.79.
Gr 1-3–This lackluster collection uses generic digital illustrations to re-tell classic stories that, in most cases, didn’t need another version. With nothing new or unique to set them apart from the many versions that already exist at a variety of reading levels, these volumes feel almost dated with their generic presentation. Each volume ends with “Beyond the Story,” providing background of the tale, a craft project or activity, and “Think About It” questions. VERDICT While better options exist for fairy tale retellings, a few titles in this series (Hansel and Gretel, The Fisherman and his Wife) might be worth purchasing for select collections where shorter, simpler versions of the stories are in demand.

George, Kallie. Family Forever. illus. by Stephanie Graegin. 208p. (Heartwood Hotel: Bk. 5). Little, Brown. Sept. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9780316567749.
Gr 2-5–This precious series about a cozy hotel for creatures in the heart of Fernwood Forest continues with new adventures for Mona the mouse and her friends at the Heartwood Hotel. One year after a forest fire raged through Fernwood, the Heartwood Hotel feels almost back to normal, except for the mention of the fabled Golden Acorn, a legendary treasure buried a long time ago. After a mysterious visitor drops by the hotel bearing a map that might lead to the treasure, visitors come from far and wide for their chance to search. The classic storytelling and frequent black and white illustrations make for a comforting tale that readers are sure to come back to again and again. George keeps the storyline fresh and interesting without relying on old tropes and Graegin’s hand-drawn illustrations draw readers into the delightful interiors of the hotel. VERDICT A great addition to the series. Purchase for collections where the earlier books circulate well.

In this early chapter book series, CJ and his best friend—who lives right across the street—start a neighborhood litter clean-up, adjust to new glasses, track down their teacher’s missing book, and play in CJ’s first-ever soccer game. Each book is divided into three short chapters with large, full-color illustrations and only a few sentences per page, making it an ideal series for readers transitioning to chapter books. The stories are simple but engaging, offering relatable challenges and valuable life lessons. A consistent structure—character introduction, glossary, and reflection questions—supports comprehension and builds confidence. While the format and storytelling are reminiscent of other series in this category, the representation of a child with ADHD adds meaningful depth. VERDICT A fun and approachable series for emerging readers. A solid choice for libraries where early chapter books are in high demand.

Dory has joined a soccer team and is struggling to get along with a new teammate, who seems to outdo her at just about everything. Meanwhile, her friends Rosabelle and George are embroiled in their own imaginary games and personal dramas, and Dory calls on her Fairy Godmother, Mr. Nuggy to help with the situation. Harrison, Lisi & Daniel Kraus. Season’s Eatings. 248p. (Graveyard Girls: Bk. 3).Union Square Kids. Sept. 2024. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781454944584.
Gr 3-7–In this third book of this spooky series, the holiday season has arrived, but the girls are feeling a different kind of spirit presence after the murderer Silas Hoke’s grave, including his bones, go missing from the graveyard. On top of that, the girls are all dealing with personal crises: Whisper from her father’s engagement announcement, Gemma with saving the Spirit Sanctuary, Sophie and the doll that’s haunting her, Frannie with boredom, and Zuzu with being the town’s ghost whisperer. This series reads like “The Babysitters Club” meets Wednesday, with lots of macabre jokes and casual asides about ghosts and gore. Nothing too graphic or too scary happens, however, which makes it perfect for tween girls in search of scary but not too scary books. Black-and-white illustrations are sprinkled throughout, adding a bit of visual interest to an otherwise text-heavy series. VERDICT Recommended for collections where the first two books have caught on.

Gr 2-5–In this playful new series, readers meet El Cucuy, one of many mischievous little monsters hatched to scare children into behaving. The smallest of his group, El Cucuy is assigned to frighten a boy named Ramón—but when Ramón isn’t even a little bit scared, what’s a monster to do? The humor of cucuys disliking fresh air and flowers but relishing boogers, spit, bugs, and other stinky delights is sure to amuse young readers. This sweet and silly chapter book shows that monsters aren’t always what they seem. Abundant black-and-purple illustrations enhance the text and bring the quirky creatures to life. VERDICT A solid choice for larger collections or libraries where monster-themed books are in demand.

In these two volumes, the siblings rescue an otter with an injured leg and two baby screech owls who have fallen from their nests. In addition to the irresistible, heart tugging storylines of injured animals, veteran author Messner weaves in relatable social and emotional issues faced by the tween main characters. This combo makes for an uncommonly well written series that stands out among the many other rescue animal series out there. Evocative black and white portraits are sprinkled throughout the text and back matter includes an author’s note, sources and tips for being a wildlife hero. VERDICT Recommended for all collections.

Each book highlights a real-world application: Ana codes a pollination game to teach her buddy in India; Hagan researches whales with help from a marine biologist and collaborates on a class presentation; Jack designs an inclusive playground using 3-D software; and Sonia promotes kindness and safety as a digital citizen. The class is diverse, creative, and tech-savvy, modeling collaboration and innovation. ea vol: illus. by Mike Yamada. 80p. (Russell Bros). Penguin Workshop. Sept. 2025. pap. $6.99.
Gr 1-3–In this kooky and chaotic new series, readers meet the Russell Bros, three Jack Russell terriers who love their human family and will do anything it takes to keep them safe and happy. They also have super-secret identities as doggie action heroes who each have vehicles: a plane, a speedboat, and a sports scar. In these first two adventures, the brothers are trying to retrieve their (human) baby brother’s missing Binki and retrieve their human sister’s lost hat at a museum. But they must also contend with their arch-nemeses: the ferrets Olivia and Oliver who thwart their efforts every chance they get. Did you follow all of that? The storyline, set up and illustrations (a mix of photographs of real animals and cartoon-style illustrations) make for a chaotic reading experience that might overwhelm new readers who just want to get through a chapter. Text is displayed in log-style entries, multi-colored text bubbles and lists. Kids who are just looking for silly novelty adventure stories may enjoy this series, but it is not ideal for every new reader. VERDICT Purchase for larger collections with a variety of readers.

Gr 1-3–Seven-year-old Huxley Higgins can’t seem to help causing chaos and confusion wherever he goes. In this first set of four books in the series, readers quickly learn that Huxley, like his spiritual ancestor Ameila Bedelia, takes the things his parents say quite literally: catching a ferry = catching a fairy; “Grandpa caught a bug,” means a giant space bug in Huxley’s mind; umpire sounds like vampire, and so on. With bright, engaging photos on every page, large print, and short chapters, young readers will love Huxley’s shenanigans and, in some cases, enjoy knowing more than he does. It’s easy to imagine this being a favorite series of some readers. VERDICT Recommended for most collections.

These stories, which were written in partnership with a principal dancer with the royal ballet, feature realistic ballet details that young dancers will appreciate, as well as regular illustrations throughout. VERDICT Recommended for collections where longer chapter books are needed and there is an interest in ballet.

Gr 1-4–Hitch the hedgehog detective and his food-loving sidekick, Vinnie the rat, are back on the case—this time investigating the mysterious disappearance of wooden carousel animals. As the duo questions zoo residents and sets a trap to catch the culprits, readers are treated to a mystery full of puns and wordplay. Many of the jokes are explained, making the humor accessible for younger readers while still amusing older ones. Frequent, colorful illustrations add to the fun and help break up the text, making this an appealing choice for early chapter book readers. The silly tone and banter-filled dialogue keep the story lively, though Vinnie’s constant food-focused tangents occasionally distract from the main plot.
