From Kitchens to Crime Scenes: General Science | Series Made Simple Fall 2011

These series fall neatly into two groups: introductions to the gathering and processing of forensic evidence from archaeological or crime scenes—and everything else. The latter category contains general surveys of the natural world and collections of low-budget demonstrations and experiments designed to teach students about thinking systematically and observing scientific principles in action. In all of these series, the level and reliability of the contents vary, but bright, inviting page designs, well-chosen illustrations, and back matter that includes suggestions for both print and Web resources are, with noted exceptions, standard. Better yet, from the "science by the pound" approach taken by Rourke's bountiful "My Science Library" to the deliciously daffy pairing of science and science fiction in Capstone's "Monster Science," nearly all are likely to kindle readers' interest.

Gr 1-2-Well designed to inject jolts of interest into emerging readers, each of these mini-albums presents marvels-from crowd-pleasing information about fried crickets and durian (a fruit that "smells like dead fish or dirty toilets!") in Food to giant hailstones and lenticular clouds in Weather. Each spread features a paragraph about the strange thing or phenomenon, opens with an attention-grabbing headline ("Kuiper Belt/Can it hold up your pants?"), and closes with the refrain, "It's weird, but it's true!" Large color photos or illustrations reflect the featured subjects. The back matter in each volume will stoke further curiosity nicely. BRYAN, Dale-Marie. Experiments with Magnets. reprods. PLB $28.; pap. $6.95. Gr 1-3-A new subset of a key series, these latest titles do not meet the expectation of solid reliability. Each brightly designed book contains directions for demonstrations or experiments (requiring modest expenditures for materials and equipment) and boilerplate introductions to the scientific method, proper techniques, background information, and safety advice. Small but clear color photos show scientists in the field, relevant items or forces at work, and children performing each activity. Unfortunately, some projects come with badly stated hypotheses ("A plant will be able to grow if part of its root is cut off") or poor design (such as a demonstration of momentum that assumes a skateboard will roll straight down a narrow board), and the "True Statistics" included in every volume contain moot tallies, such as "number of permanent magnets in your home or car: 50." K-Gr 3-Designated as level K-1, 1-2, or 2-3, each of these slender volumes introduces a science concept by pairing sharp, well-chosen color photos with brief explanatory texts. Every title comes with review questions and quick comprehension/extension exercises. Safety Rules and Science Tools are particular standouts for creating starting points for any level of scientific enquiry. Conversely, Mouse is really an introduction to the components of a PC work station that is unlikely to teach even kindergarteners anything that they don't already know, and in some titles the concepts are oversimplified. For example, Living or Nonliving? declares, "A book cannot move on its own. It must be nonliving," and What Is It Made of? includes an unlikely challenge to identify all the materials in a complex playground structure from a photo. HINDMAN, Susan. Gr 2-3-Each of these deceptively simple-looking volumes uses historical facts to place demonstrations or experiments in context and encourages children into try to answer questions using the scientific method. The series covers specific concepts (such as evaporation or parallax), introduces famous scientists and explains why they are significant, and then invites readers to join the grand march of science by, for example, figuring out their family car's mileage, comparing relative density by melting butter and chocolate in a microwave, or creating "rain" with a bowl covered in plastic wrap. Though the standard advice about setting up experiments and conducting research, and the mix of color photos and simple cartoon images may put off older students, this series offers intellectually stimulating activities and a savvy approach to instilling in readers a properly scientific outlook. Gr 2-3-Aimed at young scientists with limited resources, each volume describes nine simple experiments that use common household items and substances. Most of the projects require little or no setup, and the author provides neither lists of required supplies nor instructions more precise than, for example, "1. Pour some water into a bowl. 2. Add some cooking oil." Directions, comments, related facts, and safety tips are enclosed within bubbles floating around appropriately informal illustrations of children engaged in relevant activities as pets or other small animals watch. Each volume's title only hints at its scope. For example, Bugs goes beyond observing insects to cover building a (temporary) earthworm terrarium and creating rainbows, while Shadows includes using mirrors and creating static electricity. PLB $21.25. Gr 1-2-Comparable in topics, titles, and reading level to the "My World of Science" series (Heinemann), these introductions cover broad topics (Electricity, for example, includes electric flow, appliances in the home, generation and distribution, sockets and plugs, batteries, and circuits) in a few simple sentences. Each volume ends with an uninspired experiment-in Light, the activity is to test whether tinsel, a paper clip, or a pencil will sparkle under a flashlight.

Gr 4-6-Doubly useful for combining exercises in analytical reading and logical thinking with exploration in specific fields of science, each of these titles is framed as a journal kept by a young researcher on a "mission." Each narrator interviews or is supervised by scientists or professionals who show and explain a range of phenomena and concepts from how microwaves, cell phones, and gaming systems work to differences in composition and biota in different kinds of soil. Embedded in the discussions are thought experiments, easily reproducible physical demonstrations, fact summaries, and small photos or diagrams. Capstone/Graphic Library. 2011. PLB $29.32; pap. $7.95. Gr 3-6-Elaborating on topics explored in somewhat less depth in Capstone's "Graphic Science" series starring the character Max Axiom, these volumes combine straightforward informational science texts with a graphic-novel format and comical illustrations of bug-eyed aliens, zombies, and other horror-story uglies that delineate the featured topics. In Bigfoot, for example, a large and hairy companion accompanies an oblivious Charles Darwin on his travels and poses as a tree to demonstrate "camouflage." Similarly, Aliens discusses different kinds of energy, Vampires explores how cells make up all living things, Zombies explains Newton's Laws, and Werewolves and Ghosts both cover atoms. These titles win the prize for most original approach. ELDRIDGE, Stephen. Trace Evidence: Dead People Do Tell Tales. ISBN 978-0-7660-3664-2; ISBN 978-1-59845-366-9. LC 2010001117. FAULK, Michelle. Gr 5-7-Using actual cases as frameworks, these volumes focus on different types of crime evidence, providing information about the history of the cases, the development of modern forensic techniques, technical procedures, and relevant specialized careers. Trace is an overview for most of the series, covering fingerprints, blood and DNA analysis, gunshot residue, and other topics that are examined in more detail in the other titles. Cybercrime stands a little apart from the other books since it surveys the history of electronic crimes from phone phreaking to Internet piracy. Though the general focus is on crimes against humans, DNA includes a chapter on "Wildlife Forensics" and the trade in elephant ivory and other illegal animal products. Each volume is illustrated with decorative (if not always informative) color photos. MCGILL, Jordan. Earth Science Fair Projects. ISBN 978-1-61690-651-1; ISBN 978-1-61690-655-9. LC 2011014123. ----. Gr 4-5-Offering several projects per volume sandwiched between boilerplate step-by-step advice for researching, creating, and presenting a superior product, this series provides helpful guidance for inexperienced science-fair participants. Each project is linked to a specific topic within a broad area of science, and the directions come with brief background information and associated videos, slide shows, and other online resources available from a dedicated Web page. With rare exceptions, like the pair of lenses required to make a telescope or four Petri dishes for growing bacteria, materials are all commonly available. Instructions are clear but general enough to require plenty of creativity, and all projects are rated for difficulty and include relevant cautionary notes. Except for the baking soda volcano in Earth Science, there are no pictures of finished projects to provide slackers with easy-to-copy models. MIDTHUN, Joseph. Electricity. ISBN 978-0-7166-1421-0. Gr 4-6-In these cartoon introductions to physics, primary color creatures that are meant to represent physical science forces or phenomena conduct readers on guided tours of their book's subject. For all the texts's brevity and the extremely basic visuals, the information conveyed in the comic-book-style panels is both broad and specific. Electricity, for example, explains how current and static electricity work, but also surveys bioelectricity, conductors and insulators, the history of electrical generation, and the benefits of cutting down on the use of energy at home. Gravity mentions Isaac Newton, inertia, solar system dynamics, and black holes. Despite much simplification-and no definition of metalloids or of plasma in either volume about matter-these titles are quick, clear first exposures to their subjects. Gr 3-5-Filled with average descriptions of forces, types and forms of energy, and the nature of matter, these volumes present basic surveys of how energy is put to work in nature, our bodies, and technology. The texts are broken up into brief, easy-to-follow segments and interspersed with large color photos, boxed thumbnail profiles of scientists, clearly labeled diagrams, and instructions for simple demonstrations or experiments. Power skips nuclear energy but highlights sustainable usage and renewable resources. The final page in each volume focuses on a few cutting-edge developments; for example, Life covers the potential for improved artificial limbs modeled on ostrich joints. PLB $28.50. Gr 4-6-Lurid case studies and sometimes gruesome, staged photos of crime victims or blood-spattered evidence add melodrama to these introductions. CSI opens with a still from one of the CSI TV shows, though it goes on to note that gathering evidence is seldom as easy as the programs portray, and often that evidence-as exemplified in the investigation of JonBenet Ramsey's murder-is ambiguous or compromised by shoddy procedures. Forensic Cases provides an unusual historical cross section of crimes, from murder to art theft, in which such evidence played significant roles, and Cyber Crime includes discussions of hacking, cyber-terrorism, and identity theft as well as cases where criminals were nabbed using cell-phone evidence. There is extensive overlap among the broadly focused Murder Clues and some of the other volumes. Despite a few bobbles, Rourke's "My Science Library" would work nicely as an enrichment collection for any science section serving new readers, and on smaller scales Cherry Lake's "Science Explorer Junior" and "Language Arts Explorer: Science Lab" series would make excellent additions. Enslow's "Weird But True Science" for lower grades, and for middle graders Capstone's "Monster Science" should fly off the shelves thanks to their stimulating approaches. Children's Press's "A True Book: Experiments" titles are a disappointment, and PowerKids Press's "Science Corner" is likewise a secondary choice at best. The rest make acceptable acquisitions where more materials are needed for young researchers or-in the cases of the forensics titles—casual browsers.
