Gr 1–4-Sofia and Maddi are best friends who love to race and climb the wall in the park. When Sofia looks for a snack in Maddi's fridge after playing one day, all she finds is a carton of milk. Maddi tells Sofia that there isn't enough money to buy food, so all they have is a little bit of milk and bread. Maddi asks Sofia to promise that she won't tell, but as Sofia eats dinner that night and sees all the food in her own fridge (eggs, tortillas, cheese, and a can of her dog's food), she can't help think about Maddi. Sofia tries to sneak her friend some food in her backpack, which backfires the first few times. As the days go on, Sofia tries to keep the secret, but Maddi's kindness and friendship makes Sofia realize she must do something to help Maddi. Sofia confides in her mother, and together her family takes Maddi's family groceries for their fridge. The large, colorful illustrations show the beautiful, fun friendship shared between the girls, but also adeptly depict the sadness in Maddi's face when Sofia finds the empty fridge and the anger Sofia feels at the unfairness. Information on how to help friends who may be in need of food and how to work to end childhood hunger accompanies the text.
VERDICT A necessary story that addresses childhood hunger in a way that is accessible to young children. Highly recommended. -Selenia Paz, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX
