Gr 4-6–Postman Bob, who is white, and his new teammate Marcelle, a pink-skinned, blue-haired extraterrestrial, have an important package to deliver. However, when they stop for a bite to eat, they unwittingly attract a biker gang that hounds them across the cosmos. They pick up a musician hitchhiker who looks like a frog—and who may be the “X-factor” they need to finish their job and come back in one piece. Rendered in a muted palette, Perreault’s variety of planetary settings, including the bone-shaped planet Fibula, showcase an endlessly charming imagination at work. New readers need not have read the first book, though it will certainly be in demand.
VERDICT Children and adults are equally liable to sneak this book from the other’s bookshelf to enjoy its inviting journey.
