PreS-Gr 1– Mason spends a lot of time lost in books but his little sister, Louella, cannot fathom wasting time doing something so boring. Mason tells her she just hasn’t found the right book yet and challenges her to listen to one story before he plays with her. She agrees but after just one sentence, Louella declares it boring. Mason instructs her to concentrate on the story and she gets hooked immediately. They read numerous books together, visiting all kinds of wonderful places where they walk on the moon, explore hidden caves, and experience an African safari. While the book’s message is near and dear to all educators’ hearts, the story is predictable and a bit unreal. Louella manages to turn from a skeptic to an enthusiastic reader between breakfast and lunch. The watercolor-and-pencil art is muted and plain.
VERDICT A purchase for libraries keen on getting more stories that deal with the wonder of reading.
